Mk5 Escort problems - Blue {P}
Anyone who has been reading my post in Discussion will know that my aunt has just bought a 1995 Mk5 Escort 1.6 LX.

We're very pleased with it so far considering what she paid, but unfortunately we can't get the driver's seat height adjust to work, it's stuck in the highest position so my aunts legs are touching the steering coloumn, obviously we need to get this bit sorted ASAP.

The handle feels normal, not too loose, not too tight when lifting it, but the seat just won't budge. I've checked and there's no rubbish like a can of de-icer stuck under it. Has anyone any ideas? I know it's a difficult one to deal with via a forum but I was wondering if there was a common fault on the mechanism?

The car seems to have a low coolant level as well, but she has already arranged for a tame mechanic to give it the once over for any work that needs doing and there was no sign of mayo in engine when my Uncle inspected it, so hopefully that'll turn out to be something innocent. The car runs fine anyway, and I don't think headgaskets are prone to failure on the Zetec, fingers crossed, hopefully just a small leak from a pipe.

Also, the rear wiper doesn't work, I haven't had time to try and diagnose it yet, the only thing that I noticed was that when my aunt used the front windscreen wash, the wipers didn't move, she had to switch them on herself. Could this indicate that it is the control stalk that is at fault? Or are the relays kept somewhere else?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated as always...

I had one in a couple of weeks back and the rear wiper didn't work. I looked in the fusebox and the fuse was missing, put one in and it worked fine. I guess someone must have run out of spare fuses and nabbed the rear wiper one for something else more important. Worth a look in the fusebox then, before assuming anything more expensive. The wipers didn't wipe when operating the wash on mine either, I don't know if this is by fault or by design.

Ahh, I did wonder if it may have been a design feature that the front wipers didn't come on automatically, a bit pathetic for a 1995 MK5 vehcile I think but there you go... I'll be checking the fusebox as a matter of priority tommorow.

Apart from these minor niggles we still think it's a very tidy example of an otherwise very nice car.

Blue,

The front wipers on my Granada don't come on with the washers either. Must be common to older Fords. Good luck with the other problems - hope your aunt has years of happy motoring out of it!

As for the seat ,best just go to a scrapyard and buy a second hand one, should cost about 10 to 20 pounds as the height adjustment are pains to fix plus might end up costing you loads of money if ford has anything to do with it
good luck

I've been driving Fords for the past 40 years and I have never owned one where the wipers came on with the washers;I've always had to move the switch up or down.

Result!

She came round today and was showing my dad the car, he grabbed the seat, pulled the handle and it moved! God knows how he did it, I think it's cos I sprayed it with WD40 earlier and it must have only just started to penetrate :-) Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it, I can't let him take all the credit!

As for the wipers, I remembered another common Ford flaw, the little brass prongs on the boot lid that make contact with some plates on the bumper bar often get dirty and corroded and stop making proper contact. Had a look at her's and they were scruffy, unfortunately I only had a second to look, and no time to start cleaning them up, so I pointed it out to her. Hopefully once they are clean and making good contact again it might fix it. However, I'm not sure if these contacts actually have anything to do with the wiper, but it can't hurt to give them a clean.

I will update as soon as I know whether it worked...

yeah it was the WD40 that done it ,lol
