My lovely Vauxhall Omega 2.5 CDxi with all the toys has blown a piston so I have bought a ToyotA Carina while I wait for a replacement engine.
The Toyota is a bit boring but otherwise OK for a cheapy.
But one thing irritates the cr*p out of me. The Central Locking!!. According to the manual all doors should unlock when I open the drivers door...they dont but do when I close it again . When I am in the car I can press the door lock button and it works fine but of course as soon as I get out again....
Turning the key in the drivers lock locks the driverss door but has no effect on the rest of the doors. To lock the car completely I have to go through a complicated routine of manually locking all the doors by crawling back in the passenger side.
Quite comical really and I have taken to leave the thing open rather than go through the hassle.
Any suggestions ? (apart from rude or amusing ones that is !!)And I have already thought about exiting via the sun roof or boot
Cheers

Mark, my father-in-law's 1984 Camry had exactly this problem. He used to get out of the car, press the internal door lock button to lock the other three doors, press down the door lock button on the driver's door 'window ledge', hold the external handle in the 'open' position and then shut the door. Worked every time.
Hope this helps

Yes, it is a feature of Toyota. Same with my parents older ones (ones without remote central locking). If you press the lock button on the driver's door and shut it, the button comes back out. This is to prevent you locking the keys inside the car by accidentally press the button and slam the door shut.
The work around is to hold the externally handle while shutting it.
The other three doors do not have this feature.

Thanks Rob and Gazza
However have tried your suggestions to no avail. I havent got the buttons on the 'window ledge' but have got them as part of the door opening handles. They show the red 'lines'. I can press the door lock button before I get out but even holding the door handle up and flicking the red button to close as soon as the door closes....
The drivers door is then locked and all the others are open !!!
Perhaps if I train a monkey......

I had an american one which worked something like this;
Locking - open the door, press the lock buttons so that all the other doors lock, shut the drivers door and lock it with the key.
Unlocking - unlock the drivers door and either hold the key in the unlock position or twist it twice.

Does the boot lock close all the C/Locking as well? I know my old BMW had a weary C/L switch on the drivers door, so I used to deadlock the boot, thus locking all the doors.
Made more sense as well - if scrote had broken in (as happened) he couldn't access the boot, due to deadlock. 9for some reason, the passenger doors didn't have a deadlock feature.
