Peugeot high Oil Consumption - Gwailo

I have a pug 406 LSX 1.8 petrol, it has done 33,000miles and is 1998 S-Reg. It has a bad oil consumption problem. In 2000miles it has used 2.5 litres of oil. There is no apparent loss of thru leakage nor from any smoke via the exhuast. What could be the problem?
