The dreaded mis fire on cylinder 3 1.2 polo engine rears its head again, I'm against replacing the head completly however Iam considering having it taken off replacing the valves and refitting just to get another year or two out of the car. I have been quoted £350 plus parts so I'm assuming around the £450 mark I don't want to spend any more than £500 in total do you think changing just the valves will do the trick?

Probably not worth the effort.These need valves and guides and while the engine is apart,it is very likely it will need the timing chain ,guides and sprockets replacing.

Aaargh!! Geoff have you had the cylinders pressure tested. If 3 is down then it's a cylinder head job. I think I've read on a specialist forum of a master tech rebuilding the 6 valve models. But he is a VW specialist. It can be done, depends how confident you are with your mechanic?
Did you manage to fix the front seat forward tilt?

Yes had the test carried out and a fail on 3, so my decision is not to do the work but continue to run it locally, it's ok under 60mph, seat fixed slid clip back onto bracket and added a cable tie, tricky but done. It's a shame because it's a great little car new mot runs fine apart from the valve issue, I may offer it in for part exchange but I can't justify spending £1000 on sorting out the valve issue.

An update to this common issue for me, a retired mechanic has offered to remove the head and replace what is ever is required for £200 so what should I be replacing and will I need part wise inc putting it back together.
All advice and time given gratefully received.

How "retired" is your mechanic.?If the last car he worked on was a Cortina, then he is going to need a lot of background reading and the timing set-up tools.

He is early sixties, sold his business a couple of years ago to a mate and plans to take it back into the workshop on a Saturday. His ex business didn't do mots only mot work, servicing, clutches etc I used him a few times in the past as he was local so I don't think the job it self would be problem, tools should be on hand.
Looking on line I guess as a minimum would be a cylinder head kit inc valves for around the £150 mark but looking on vw forums they talk about timing chain and sprocket / tensioner as well, do I need to go the that length if I plan to move on it anyway?

The problem with this engine,and most modern engines,is that you can't just take the cylinder head off without removal of loads of other bits.Head off on these requires timing cover and chain off,sump off,and various other bits.You are probably going to do the whole lot,or nothing.Do you feel lucky?

A new VW exchange head is £500 or £600 respectively so taking into account the extremely recommend fitment of the timing chain update set, gaskets, bolts, coolant, filter, plugs,plus labour if he's willing to all that work for £200 that's a bargain provided you could source an exchange cylinder head at a reasonable price.

Left this decision until now ( new year ) still not sure if all the expenditure of parts plus the labour cheap I know is worth spending on a 54 played car, even a replacement head would still need an element of new parts inc timing chain etc.
I'm thinking just to continue running it around local until I get fed up and scrap it.
