ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

i have a ford focus 1.8tdci 2007 it has recently started to make a droning noise at the front which is louder than the engine. It is speed related and doesn't really start until about 25 mph, when i dip the clutch the noise continues, i have no problems with gear changing and no problems with the car generally except for the noise.

So far i have changed both bearings, both drive shafts and cv joints it has had new wishbones, but i still have the noise. It has to be some sort of drive problem as it doesn't do it on tick over. Stumped

Any oil in the gearbox?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

thats the next option is this the noise a dry gearbox will make?

Possible cause is tyre scalloping or cupping - it will cause a droning noise, I've had it on rear tyes on my last car an 07 Civic.

i dot know what tyre scalloping is but have rotated the tyres and noise in same place

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - focussed

Tyre scalloping is where the tread blocks around the circumference wear to be higher at the trailing edge than at the leading edge. You can check for it by rubbing your flat hand around the tyre's tread first one way then the other. If it's scalloped you will feel that the tread feels rough in one direction more than the other. It causes a droning ,buzzing noise at speed.

Causes are tracking or suspension geometry out of spec.

I dont think my tyres are like that so can anybody give me anymore suggestions, i dont believe its a failing gearbox but it could be low on fluid, why i dont know as no leaks.

getting to the headscratching point as just cannot pin point it, trying not ot put it into a garage as started looking at the problem and dont want to give in that easily,

In your original post you state: So far i have changed both bearings, both drive shafts

Removing the drive shafts will drain most of the oil from the gearbox/diff. Did you not notice?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

But it was noisey before i changed the driveshafts and yes there was a small amount of fluid that came out.

The filler/level plug is above the driveshaft so you need to check it properly.

Is the filler/level plug like a dipstick also?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

Am i doing long term damage by driving it like this especially if it is low on transmission fluid?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - RichardW

If it's noisy the damage is already done.... Assuming it's a bearing in the box, then it might quieten down if you refill the oil, but chances are it won't

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

does that mean a new bearing or new gearbox?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

any more advice on this please, also have videoed the noise but not brilliant but you can hear it, but dont know how to upload onto here?

As a matter of interest, are you sure noise is coming from front, sometimes rear wheel bearings can sound like fronts. Just a thought

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

yes defo front

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

my friend has spoke to a mechanic now and he said he has exactly the same problem and did the same as me ie change bearings cv joints etc only to realise that it is the diff bearing? or bearing? in the gearbox and run it till it goes if you can put up with it then change the gear box. but i am pricing a new gearbox at the moment.

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - Bolt

Diff bearing noise is not unusual on a lot of cars (that I know of) but can last for years if you can put up with it, it may be reduced by changing the oil, but rarely does

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

could it be anything more than a gearbox before i order a gearbox and new clutch?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

hi anybody else have any thoughts on this please, i can get a breakers gearbox of ebay for about £70 plus new clutch kit for about £90 an online company called click mechanic will fit a gearbox on my drive for £216 in 4.5 hours but not sure if i am allowed to source the parts my self, so could be alot more. is a gearbox a specialist thing or can a fairly compotent person like me with minimal equipment do it myself or do you need and specialist tools and equipment to do it? would suit me to do it for less than £200 if feasible rather than specialist for £216-1200.

hi anybody else have any thoughts on this please

About 10yrs ago I had a similar noise just like a worn front wheel bearing but my excellent indy told me it was most unlikely (big Audis don't usually have such problems) even though he agreed it was a very similar noise. His suggestion that it was the tyre(s) was correct.

I think it was the steel mesh embedded in the rubber that was harmonically droning. Perhaps it had been distorted by a pothole. Fortunately they were nearly due for changing and the noise then disappeared. Sorry you have had what sounds like a lot of unnecessary mechanical work done. Do please let us know the outcome.

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

i have rotated the tyres and still noise at front, dont mind the unecessary work means i have a new front end now because it also has new wishbones and pads, just want rid of this noisy droning now as it louder than the engine. Now looking at "who can fix my car" for quotes just trying to find easiest and cheapest way if its the gearbox.

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - medview

Have you tried weaving down the road loading up one side of the car and then the other and listening for a difference?

Have you tried differing tyre pressures?

Is the noise changed under braking?

All 4 of your tyres could be similarly afflicted. Are they all the same type/brand?

I had 4 tyres on a VW golf all contributing noise to some extent. My noise was more a subsonic rumble. It was probably caused by years of low mileage use, lots of standing around.

Good luck.

Joe

Still sounds like diff whine to me, I understand the tyre comments made but i`m not convinced it is tyres.

regardless of tread depth the tyre drone would alter with differing road surfaces/weather conditions, but without hearing the noise its just a guess imo

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - blindspot

check the brake guard is well clear of disc

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - bathtub tom

The OP has never said he's checked the gearbox oil level!

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

it cant be tyres, it is really noisy, too the point i cant hear the engine, a local mechanic had the same problem with his car and changed everything like me and then said his diff bearing has gone and if you can put up with the noise it will keep going. and as far as gear box oil i havent checked but when we changed the drive shaft small amount came out so i know it has some and it wasnt black. but like someone says it could be fluid but the damage has already been done.

Still waiting for quotes from "wecanfixyourcar" but nothing yet. Anybody else tried this online company?

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - Bolt

If you want to listen and compare diff noise,ie yours is the same, there are plenty on youtube.

and would agree once you have diff noise, a change to a thicker oil would be a possible quiten down, but may be a waste of time and money!

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - bathtub tom

>>as far as gear box oil i havent checked

For chrissake, why don't you pull out out the filler/level plug and put in the correct oil to the correct level before bothering us any more and perhaps saving youself a load of money?

It'll only take a fraction of time you spend online here.

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - Bolt

Let us know how you get on, be interesting to know what was/is wrong..

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

After seeing Richard W comment about gearbox oil i didnt check it because he said rthe damage is is already done so i moved onto the next step.

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - peter moss

Ok lot of imput here but one thing to try is to check the fluid / oil level in the unit , 2/ jack the car up and then get your hand around the drive shaft at the gearox end and check for play if it moves up and down you got problems , noises like this are a matter of applied systematics you have to test one thing at a time ,

one bloke had a droning noise turned out to be a PCV valve oscialting !

ford focus 1.8 tdci 2007(57) - same old droning noise from front - graham wines

what am i looking for doing that as i have changed both driveshafts?
