citreon picasso xzara 03 - breaks - jacky owen

Hi i have changed the break pads and disks also calipers on front of my citreon and yet she still feels like the breaks are binding somewhere, i have also bled and put in new break fluid, any advice i am tearing my hair out and also empting my purse at an alarming rate.

To check for binding brakes, drive along a dual carriageway for a few miles without using the brakes at all and then pull up in a convenient layby by slowing down entirely on the gears (helps if the latby is uphill) and only apply the brakes to bring it to a final halt, then get out and have a good sniff and (careful cos a really hot disc will burn badly) feel round the brakes, all round not just the fronts.

I do this probably once a week in my lorry when loaded, checking as much for hot wheel bearings as binding brakes.

Its just as likely the rears are binding if binding is indeed the problem.

new sliding pins too?

have you tried, by hand,
pushing the piston in
and seeing if the calipers move are free to move too.

mine had both seized piston, and seized caliper too !

Good Luck
Liam

ps, Gordon,
I have just this second, invested in one of these :)

It'll be interesting to see what temps the discs get up to etc, and if there's any small binding on one side etc

Good man Liam, better than my gingerly touching the discs hoping not to leave several layers of me fingerprints as a permanent reminder.

Still got the good old 106 then?, excellent.

lol, I have been that, done that ,
and left the top layer of skin , and a few cuss words, ..to prove it :)

now, I wet my fingers before going any where near the discs

Yes , my little 106 "Purdy" is still going strong, thanks

The alternator belt snapped last week, and it was an adventure watching the lights dim, then the engine light come on, then misfires !
(I couldn't stop, as I was on a dark stretch of a single carriageway)

...back home, via my personal chauffeur (ie the RAC )
and £3.78 later, for an alternator belt, ...all is good with the world

A few months ago, I was spot welding the seats' tubings,
and where they go into the frame..

Not perfect, but a lot safer than they had been for the last yearr, I would guess !
(also, I had to be very, very careful not to set fire to the carpets or the insulation ! that's why I spot welded and cooled with water , asap)

I'm looking at getting a towbar (or making one) for my little 1.1 monster.
so I can tow a trailer etc....It's good to have ambitions :)

I just saw this... and would be tempted , if my stoopid car would only break down !
diesel , 75,000 miles, £250... and I could weld the boot

ps , it's been 3 years to the day, and 40,000 miles , since the infamous timing belt snap. ! thanks to all, for all the help with that one !

Keep on truckin', Gordon :)
I hope all is good with you and yours.
All the very best
Liam

ps I am also helping other with their cars..
eg A side mirror for £20 from ebay, and I showed the guy how to fit it..
(he was quoted £500 from Kia Carens !)

and have just done an oil change for my brother (quoted £120 from ford!)

My reputation preceeds me.

Liam, you're a breath of fresh air mate, do crowds come out to see this rare sight of a bonnet up and someone daring to work on their own car, we've lived in this house about 12 years now and my cars are the only bonnets i've ever seen raised so not a hope that anyone would dare venture underneath...however out house is quite hidden so only one neighbour would know if i was doing any car work.

Word of warning, though, once people know you're handy with the spanners they'll pester the life out of you, which is ok if you want to make a small business of it, be be warned by someone who'se been there, there is oodles of free work to be had.

Handy bit of welding, well done, that Diesel could be a canny buy mega cheap to run, and i like your dog keeping an eye on things.

Truckin going well thanks matey, been at work yesterday and today, 2 day week this week, its a hard life..:-)

haha :) , thanks Gordon

Very, very wise words !
about the spanner summoning scallywags !

I don't fix the car outside the house anymore,
as I was getting pestered to death !
...and for me,
since I am new to all this,
a moments distraction can cause all sorts of problems !

It is unbelievable what they have been asking, as I under the car, juggling bits, and trying to remember what goes where !

I think that if they see someone fixing things,
then they guess that he must be a "fixer of things"

Whilst up to my arms in oil,
I've been summonsed from a random person on the pavement
"can you fix my boiler"
"my sewing machines not sewing.."
"can you fix my tv"
"can I borrow your tools"
..and then they get the umph when I say "sorry mate, I'm not just handing them out" (I have never seen these people in my life !)

Great to hear that you are not working too hard :)
Enjoy !

All the best Gordon and many thanks for your help over the years.
Cheers
Liam
