Tiguan - VW 1.4 TSI 160 - which oil - JSW71

Hi

Posted at the weekend, about my Tiguan problems. Taken into the dealer and prior to running the £170 diagnostics, they think it is the timing chain.

I did notice that of the 3 services the same dealer did 2 used a "Workshop Castrol GTX" and the final one (Nov 15 - approx 1100 miles ago) used "Bulktank Shell Helix".

Ran a search at Millersoils (below) but not sure what these mean. Understand this is a senstive engine and needs the right oil and wondered if the different oil had any impact, or am I clutching at straws?

Thanks

VW's require oils which meet the relevant VW oil spec for your engine. This can vary depending on the service intervals set.

The info will be in your handbook or service book.

Sadly cars have so many varying and specific oil spec's these days what you asked about the oil is like asking is red or white wine nicer!

Sadly the 1.4 tsi engine is know to have many issues with miss fires coils plugs and if not resolved end up with cracked pistons.

As with experiences not this engine, but VW petrol. Is get all the coil packs replaced and plugs high quality not OEM but NGK's. Once done get an indie to check the injectors with a pattern tested.

Hopeful all good.

Thanks. Believe servicing and an oil change is every 10k or 12 months, which I've done.

Shell says the car should use Shell Helix Ultra Professional and Castrol says Castrol Edge 5W-30ll

VW invoice says Bulktank Shell Helix (which came to 62.40 net, so not cheap). However, is that Shell Helix Ultra Professional? Picky I know, but I'm looking at a big bill.

If you take your car to most indies they will use any oil which they have in stock, usually the barrel in the corner. They neither know nor care about using the correct oil as they know best.

When I had my Passat I sent it for a service and the boss insisted that their oil was up to spec although it hadn't got the relevent VW specs on it. I sent my own Castrol Edge 5W/30 which I hope they used.

If you want your car properly serviced take it to a franchised dealer or a independent which specialises in your make. Or do it yourself. Do not trust your local garage to use the proper stuff and when it goes wrong they won't want to know.

I'm pretty sure the OP stated the car has been serviced 3 times by the same dealer who is investigating his problems - so they should have used the correct oil.....

Ideally the sales invoice should be clear as to exactly what type of oil they have used, particularly when modern engines are so complex. Assume there is a difference between Bulktank Shell Helix (on the invoice) and Helix Ultra Professional.

So I have a case for them using the wrong oil???

It's difficult to say. I would suggest you contact Shell and ask them what specification the "Bulktank" oil is - it should be easy enough to determine whether the oil is correct or not from that point.

No issues with the quality of the helix oil and that it's fully synthentic the point being the for example 5W30 comes in various flavours AP-L AF , AG etc

So AF is for Ford and AP-L peugeot & Fiat and AG for GM. But for all VW it's AVL which is not stated on the Invoice.
