Performance parts for old car...? - Giles
Hi,
Does anyone know whereabouts I might be able to get a performance exhaust (just back box) or/ and induction kit for a 1985 Polo Classic C? I have seen modified old Polos, but they might be specialist jobs I suppose- anyone know anywhere that might do a custom exhaust for an old Polo?

Thanks for any help,

Giles

Oh behave. They've only got about 45bhp to begin with - why bother - spend the money on beer n fags. Or have a search for an old G40.

I can see fecker's point here. On many VW sites you get questions such as "How can I squeeze a G60 engine into my 1986 Golf CL"

The reasoning behind is usually due to insurance worries but I suspect an insurer would much rather insure a standard yet high performance car rather than a car that has been "modified" in any way.

U should be able to whack on a K&N cone air filter (£35) just make sure it will fit onto ur carb. As for back-box - just go to a local s/s zorst specialist and they will knock something up for about £50-100 depending on quality.

However, it will be as much use as fitting alloy wheels to a tomato - time-consuming and totally worthless.

Go out and buy a MkI Golf GTI and run it on classic car insurance.

Is a mk.1 golf gti old enough for a classic policy?
You will be surprised, some companies like Adrain Flux have given me cheaper quotes on modified cars. I contacted them for a quote on my car. Then i rang back a while later, gave exactly the same details, except for a few modifications and was given a cheaper price. When i questioned them i was told " in our experience, people who spend money on their cars modifying them are less liekly to crash or make a claim"!!!!

During 1990/91 a chap I worked with passed the time away putting Rover V8 engines into one of the Lancia models. Which model I do not know but I assisted him on the heavy bits. On the subject of insurance, he told me the quotes did not vary much from the unmodified versions. I think the mods had the approval of the Lancia Owners' club.

What are the best Autoglym products to restore fading paint?

Thanks

Sorry - not cone filter - saucepan type methinks.

Yeah, thats right, if I could I'd be running a V12 Aston Martin Vantage, but I can't cos I cant afford it. Nor can I afford anything but what Im driving now- all i want is a decent exhaust note. I already have all the beer and fags I need.

This is wrong- someone I read about somewhere built an RS Cosworth out of a 1.6S Escort. Proper cossie spec, 280BHP etc. insurance is £350 TPFT and the bloke is 25 or something. Proper escort cossie is group 20 insurance.

Sorry G - was a bit hard on u. I was as guilty as the next man for putting a noisy exhaust/air filter on me mini. But at least a full Janspeed on a mini actually did something - still don't see the point of swapping the back box for 0.25 hp gain......

Don't worry about your detractors, a Polo Hatch was my first car. Leave the exhaust alone.

Instead replace the VAG air filter, sparks and HT Leads, they are all sh*te so get the best ones you can afford. That will make the biggest improvement to the running of the car. They do not make the car 'modified' either.

Next, look at getting the ignition timing advanced if it hasn't anyway for unleaded fuel. However, power is up but fuel consumption and pollution is up as well.

Long term, your best bet is to grin and bear, most of you have had to do. With my Polo I blew the head gasket trying to reach 30 in second. It's your first motor.

Wait for the performance cars after a few years, it is worth it in the end.

BTW: A Golf GTI is a classic car. An 8v in good nick wouldn't set you back more than £1000.
