95 escort 1.8td smoke problem - Shades
This has probably been asked before but here goes, problem is when I start my car for the first time (morning) it runs great no smoke when driving throttle response is very good but when the engine gets to full operating temp I notice the throttle response is not as good and it starts to blow black smoke out on acceleration. I've checked the usual(air filter) and replaced but I am puzzled why it would drive great when cold and decline when hot. Can anyone point me in the right direction to the possible cause. Thanx in advance.

Most probably water in the fuel filter. Should be a drain plug on the bottom of it, but a new element is less than a fiver.

Cheers mate, already done that mate and still the same, filter has been on for about 6 months (how often should they be replaced?). When I accelerate it just feels like a dead spot that's when I get the smoke then when I push the pedal a little further the car takes off. Thanx for help though.

It could be caused by the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system.
I think these can give the odd problem on ford diesels.

Try disconnecting and blanking off the vacuum pipe from the valve on the inlet/exhaust manifold, and test.

I think on some diesels it only comes into operation when the engine is warm, and only at part throttle.

This problem may be something to do with the EGR system (which only operates when the engine has warmed up) The obvious way to test for this is to disable the EGR system by removing the vacuum pipe from the EGR valve on the exhaust manifold and then evaluate any difference. If there is an improvement further testing will be required if you wish to reinstate the EGR system.

Thanx lads, what I have found out is that the EGR is only fitted to Bosch injection systems only and I think mine has got the Cav RotoDiesel (think that's right) so I am guessing mine will not be fitted with the EGR. If I am wrong let me know or if it's right have you got anymore more sugestions to the problem. Thanx in advance.

I might be wrong but i think these engines are fitted with a boost pressure activated diaphraph unit connected to the inlet manifold , i think these allow fuel delivery to be increased with increasing boost pressure. I know of cases of the diaphraphms in these units failing resulting in the smoke problems you describe.

I think if you look on the injector pump their will be a unit mounted on it with a pipe connected to the inlet manifold area. If you remove the pipe you might find it to be full of fuel indicating a fault. Might be worth taking the top of and removing the diaphraph and looking at the rubber behind a good light to check for pinholes - that is assuming your engine has one of these fitted!.

hope this helps
