1. Forget about the badge. It is a NINE year old car. With all the possible problems of a car that age.

2. Check the service history. Hopefully, it's been over-serviced. If not, then it might only have had 4 services. Which is not enough in NINE years (continue to remember that bit). If it has so few services, walk away. Check the MOT history all adds up too, and any advisories (you can do that online).

3. Go to : www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/bmw/1-series-e81e87-...d and READ the 'what's bad' section. Properly.

4. If possible, get a friendly mechanic/garage to check for any old fault codes. These petrol engines seem to get coil pack issues quite often (notorious on the Z4)

5. Remember point 1 ? The badge ? Right. You're paying about £1000 - £1500 for the badge. If the badge means enough for you to do so, then go for it. But be very aware that you're paying a lot more for a 'prestige' badge.

Now, after all that lot, don't be completely negative about it. The 5 door 1 series is a great little car (avoid the 3 door variant though, useless). We ran a 118d for 4 years, and loved it. Never had a single problem with it either. I know someone else on here ran a 118d for a few years too, and was very happy too. I also know someone who has a 2006 118i with 130,000 miles on it, and it is still perfect. But be awake, and don't let that badge blind you.

cheers mate those are some good points. The seller came back to me its actually a cat d so thats a big no for me, because its a PITA to insure. Hmm got about 3500 tgo spend and want something with a bit of power. I am also thinking Audi a3 2.0 tdi

The early 2.0 TDi Audi/VW engines have a horrendous fault with the oil pump failing, which destroys then engine. Again, all listed in the car-by-car sections on here. And, once again, you're paying a fair bit for the badge on the car.

But petrol/diesel are hugely different. You really can't compare a 118i to a A3 2.0TDi.

If you want power and lots of 'oomph' for your cash, then might I suggest a Skoda Octavia VRS ?

I had a 118d for 5 1/2 years. Totally reliable, cheap to run and confortable providing they don't have stupid big rims and tyres. Rear seat space is tight for some but easy enough to check before you buy.

We tried the 118i before buying the 118d, no comparison, the 118d was far better and at the time only £300 more.

The 120i was far better than the 118i and I would suggest you try and find one and drive it before buying the 118i.

This seems like a nice car with oomph not bad miles on it either.

A SEAT could be a good idea as (like a Skoda) you get the mechanics of a VW or Audi without paying for the badge.

This one looks a bit expensive for a 9-y-o car: worth looking in Autotrader for something similar. I didn't realise that you could get a 2.0 petrol Leon, so I'm not sure how popular they were.

well auto trader values the car as 3,490 from private and 3950 from dealer so their price I think is quite reasonable.

Honda Civic 1.8i-VTEC? 140bhp and 0-60 in 8.3 seconds.

Ultra reliable engine and in a great package if you can put up with the spoiler on the rear windscreen...

....And the appalling lack of rear visibility, partly caused by said spoiler, and the lack of a bidet (rear wash-wipe).

sorry dude I absolutely hate the styling of the new civic
