Peugeot 307 - Fault - Forty58

My Peugeot as recently had a fault with the dpf and the mechanic cleared it out and as he did not have the software could not reset the onboard computer. After awhile white grey smoke started to come out of the exhaust and a burning smell. Took the car to a diagnostic garage and they ran tests and reset the dpf but noted that the glow plugs stay on and do not switch off. Car is permanently in limp mode and smokes like hell. Tried to disconnect the battery to reboot the system but to no avail. Garage says they will have to remap the software and will cost about 400 is there a cheaper alternative.

Don't know what previous garages did,

what's MENT to happen is the diagnostic reads the DPF pressure say 90 % on a bad one.

and that's soot clogging up a VERY fine filter.

the a forced regen procedure is done,

then the DPF load re tested and it needs to be SIGNIFICANTLY lower then the 90%.

if not the DPF is beyond regen and needs either renewed or taken off and sent to a profesional cleaner.

So either you've missunderstood what you've been told or both garages didn't know what thet were doing.

you can't "reset " a DPF.only regen it if possile.

and as for the re-map I can only assume they mean a software update to the newest version,

that's not a remap.

the glow plug problem could be the ECU's attempt at an automatic regen fubction which isn't working because the DPF LOAD % is just too high.

Get it to someone with Peugeot Planet diagnostic software and have them check the load percentage on the DPF.

If as I suspect it's very high no amount of regening or b*****ing about with software or remaps will help.

It will need a new DPF.

To put in the words of the first mechanic he knocked the gumbings out of the dpf box as it was blocked. As for the second guy he said the dpf was now fine and the only problem now was the glow plugs being permantly on and he would need to order the software to rectify which would cost £364. When I got the car back from him everything worked for a day or so the it went back into limp mode and when he put his machine on again it showed the glowplug fault. So is that easily rectified or would we have to address the dpf original fault.

So the first 'mechanic' is clueless and a bodger.

It seems the second mechanic knows that the DPF is now not a DPF and has suggested having the ECU reprogrammed for a car without a DPF.

This is why it's best to take modern cars to someone who actually knows something about electronic engine management. IIRC the 307's have a problem with the sensor failing.

Look,

a DPF is like a honey comb of tiny little holes.

which you don't have if monkey #1 smashed it out,

and the best I could hope for with that is at least he took the DPF off and didn't knock the debris into the exhaust which could block the same.

Software is required because the cars computer doesn't "know"

wHat monkey#1 has done,

and is still trying to regen the DPF.

Which explains the glow plugs.

the ECU turns them on to make more heat to try and burn the soot from out f the DPF.

which makes a kind of sense if monkey#2 IS RIGHT and the DPF is now fine!

COME ON,

HE'S TELLING YOU IT GREW BACK!!!!

MONKEY #1 trashed the DPF internals.

They do not grow back,

Which puts anything monkey #2 says into the horses*** pile.

It has to be plugged in to PEUGEOT PLANET DIAGNOSTICS.

That means the dealer or a mechanic equipped with the same gear.

not someone who bought their scann tool from ebay for £40.

You have no option other than scrapng it!

We're all in the dark just now as to what's what,

s*** I don't even know at this point the engine size or if it's fitted with an adative tank system.

VERY IMPORTANT DETAILS.

Go to CATS2U, get a new DPF.

Get the additive tank refilled.

Google "Peugeot Planet Map" to find a local fellow Peugeot owner with the diagnostics gear and the skills to use it, and get them to reset your DPF counters.

Then also run a full diagnostic scan to make sure the other components of the DPF regen system (engine fan and relays, additive tank and pump, fuel cap sensors, glow plug and relay) are all working.

Are you aware that your car is now illegal to use on the road since it has a non-functioning DPF. Any MOT station that works within the law will fail it and the only way to get it back on the road will be to spend on a new DPF and other works to correct what the muppets have done.

Can you put the names of the garages you used on the thread to ensure no one else is unlucky enough to use them.

Presume they have horses outside to complete the cowboy image.

Since when has that bothered a vast amount of drivers?

The stupid thing is that the DPF system works and will cause you much less hassle in the long run if you just fix and replace the components when they reach end of life, rather than gutting the DPF and remapping.

You factor it into the cost of ownership, and look into if the system is working before you buy a car.

CATS2U for a DPF, additive from any good motor factors and the counters reset from a fellow Peugeot owner with the diagnostic gear and you're sorted for several years to come.
