Volkswagen Polo IV - Stalling unexpectedly - arn0ld

My polo tends to stall on depressing the clutch whilst slowing when approaching a junction or roundabout. Happens about once a fortnight always under 30mph. I've always managed to restart the engine and pull away in time. It's been happening for at least 6 months. Any ideas on source of problem and if likely to be expensive to resolve?

Which engine?

If petrol, try cleaning the throttle body and butterfly. Gently, and be sparing with the cleaner

As above, and when you hasve cleaned the throttle body find someone with VCDS to test the throttle body operation and reset the basic settings. Check the VW/Audi/Skoda forums for someone near you with VCDS.

Here is a map of VCDS owners taken from www.briskoda.net. There should be someone close to where you live. Contact them and ask if they can help you.

One of the coil packs on the 3 cylinder engine (one per cylinder) change them all - check/change the plugs as well

This engine should have regular oil changes (protect cam chain) and is better with higher octane fuel (to try and avoid piston/valve damage)

P.S. Coil pack, valve and cam chain are common problems with this engine. If you don't have any rattles and your mis-fire is intermittent then it's likely to be coil pack
