Citroen Xsara Picasso - Input shaft bearing - how loud is loud? - albapa

Hi all,

I would like to ask how much noise - if any - is normal from a gearbox. The car is 2005 Xsara Picasso, 2.0 HDI with 86k. The symptom is the following: engine running idle, there is a barely audible whirring noise (not a rattle) when clutch is not depressed. The noise goes away when the the clutch pedal is fully depressed. This noise is so little that it is impossible to hear it from the inside, only when standing next to the car. At even slightly higher revs the engine noise is much louder. I try think when I first noticed it but I am not sure because it is so difficult to hear it - I believe it might have been like that for a long time.

No other issues apart from a slightly stiff 1st gear but it has always been like that.

Could this be normal i.e. do others hear it from their car?

If it is not normal, am I right that the bearings in the gearbox, and in particular the input shaft bearing could be making it?

If this is the case, what can I expect - do these deteriorate quickly? Can I expect a sudden failure? Is it worth doing any preemptive measures or should I wait? Thanks in advance.

At first reading, it could be a clutch release bearing.

If it is that, then the only thing you can do is make sure that you drive with what is known as 'mechanical sympathy'. Even then, whether you'd extend the life of it is debatable.

An alternative might be something in the gearbox, and to get the gearbox oil changed. But make sure the garage REALLY know what they're doing if you consider that, because too many manage to screw up that sort of job, it's not as easy as changing engine oil.

Apart from that, there's nothing that you can really do to avoid whatever is wearing out from wearing out. But it could keep on going for another 100k miles, or it could break down next week. However, if it's a faint noise that's not getting worse, then more likely to keep on going for quite a while.

Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

Yes, I did - it is fine.

Are you sure you've checked the oil level? Most Peugeot Citroen models do not have an oil level plug on the transmission, and so the only way to be sure the level is correct is to drain the oil and refill with the correct quantity.

Idle speed too low will also cause the gearbox to chatter, which is not unknown on these models

Yes I did check it. There is an oil level plug (confirmed from various sources including the Haynes manual) so I am sure the gearbox has the correct quantity of oil in it.

I'll take a look a the idle rev and compare it to the spec although there is not much I can do about it if it's too low I suppose.

Unless it gets very bad I wouldn't worry about it, bearings can last many thousands of miles after they start to whine. If the noise stops when you depress the clutch its almost certainly coming from the gear box although not necessaraly the first motion shaft bearing, the lay shaft is also rotating with the clutch engaged.

No matter the "official" line about filled for life from the manufacturers (PS I am an engineer at one such), in my book 90k is way too long to go without a change of oil in the gearbox. So, this would be my first port of call.

I'm a fan of Castrol Syntrans - fully synth and resonably priced at about £12 a litre. It quietened my box down quite a bit and massively improved the shift quality, especially when cold. It may be a false impression but it also feels like it's letting more power through too once it's nice and hot.

I followed your advice and drained the oil and filled it with fresh oil. I used Total in the end - it's also full synth, and I couldn't find the right specification Castrol oil.

After a couple of months and few thousand miles, I found that the noise is similar, maybe just a little bit less when the transmission is cold, but once it's warmed up, there is much less noise than before. As it definitely didn't get worse, I'll leave it like that and monitor the situation very closely.

Thanks everyone for their input.

Trust me,

when/if it gets bad you'll know it,

Did one last month,

What a noise!

Peugeot wanted £180 for a new bearing but my local bearing specialist had one in stock for £19.99!!

Still it would have been over 9 hours labour to remove strip renew the bearing,

others were fine.

Ignore it until it gets intrusive.
