Mercedes Benz C220 Sport - Tear Wear due to towing a Caravan - gms

I had my tyres checked prior to a 2000 mile caravan towing holiday & all ok.

On my return the fronts tyres were badly worn on the outer edges

I took the car into my local tyre specialist who thought it was tracking but on checking it found it to be spot on.

Due to the low suspension of this model the car sits very low at the back when towing.

The Tyre specialist believes the wear has been caused by towing a caravan as the weight of the caravan on the back has lifting the front wheels, changing the alignment which would cause extra wear on the outer edges

Does this sound logical?

Yes. Sounds entirely logical. I'd imagine your nose weight on the caravan has been way too high, pushing down the back of the car and lifting the front of it.

Do you check the nose weight on the caravan ?

If they were scrubbed after long periods of towing the two will be connected. As stated find the max nose weight for the tow bar and check the van weight before hitching up.

We carry very little weight at the front end of the caravan & have tried to compensate by carrying everything away from the nose

I met somebody on holiday who advised his C220 sat very low at the rear because of the low suspension on this model

Maybe this model isnt a good towcar or I should buy a smaller caravan!

But do you load your boot up with loads of weight? If so it will affect your cars stance in the same way as having too much nose weight on your caravan.
