Ford Focus 1.8 petrol (2004) - Lack of power and temperture rise - Engineer5

My Focus (Getting old 132,000 miles) loses power when driving up hill on motorways. It just cannot sustain speed (down to 60mph from 70/75mph). If I try to increase the throttle the temperture gauge rises quickly, but returns back to normal as soon as I take my foot off the throttle. I've had the car from new for 14 years and really has had very little problems, still has original exhaust, battery, clutch etc. Good car but now getting dangerous when overtaking uphill.

Any one had similar problems and how did it get fixed?

Sounds like it could be a coolant flow problem, possibly stat or a partially blocked rad.Engine control system is able to change strategy and reduce power so as not to toast the engine.Another possible is the start of head gasket failure.A chemical sniff test should help here.
