hi all ive got a 52 plate 1.8 tdci ford focus estate wich has got 111000 miles. Recently ive had a misfire wich has been getting worse. this misfire baffles me, its only there when its cold, but when the car warms up it seems to disapear. If anybodys experianced this all advice gladly taken

If it hasn't yet had a set of replacement injectors,it is probably due a set at this mileage.Get the car to a diesel specialist to get them tested.

Other possibilities could include a loss (but not complete loss) of compression on one cylinder, or even a cracked cylinder head. Try the following.

Loosen the coolant pressure cap to release the pressure when you arrive home at night, and when you're not going to use the car until next morning. Tighten the cap immediately after the pressure has been released. Start the engine the next morning and note if the misfire has gone. If it has the cylinder head may be cracked. The next evening don't do anything. Start the engine again the next morning and see if the misfire is back.

The cylinder head may have a crack which is closing as the head warms up due to the aluminium alloy expanding. As it cools the crack will open up allowing a small amount of coolant into the cylinder, hence the misfire. Relieving the pressure before the engine cools will help prevent coolant entering the cylinder.
