Any - John O'Groats - Land's End: average journey speeds - craig-pd130

I was reading this story (from Superbike magazine, 1984) about a rapid journey from John O'Groats to Land's End - 884 miles in 11 hours 14 minutes on a Kawa GPz750 turbo, at a point-to-point average of nearly 79mph: www.tubbylardo.co.uk/2011%282a%29.html

I don't think that would be possible these days, given traffic volumes, speed cameras etc: in fact, averaging even 60mph point to point usually involves cruising above the legal limit most of the time.

Do Back Roomers believe that average journey times have increased, and average speeds dropped, over the past couple of decades?

My journey times have increased a bit,
and my average speeds have dropped rather a LOT - just over the past one decade, mainly due to scam-eras and the cost of fuel.

And probably getting a bit more mature. I still go bipolar from time to time though.

ISTR a poster on here some years back claimed that he did a weekly run leaving Plymouth at 9pm on a Friday and arriving in Scarborough 4 hours later. I think that would have meant an AVERAGE of 90 mph, which I have great difficulty believing. Mind you I think he was in an old Volvo S40 diesel (with the Renault engine), so maybe that didn't draw to much attention (?)

My musings were partly prompted by something my brother-in-law mentioned, which I believe to be a huge exaggeration.

He claims that he's able to drive from his home near Swindon to the holiday cottage they regularly go to in North Yorks (250 miles on the M1 / A1 and local A-roads) in around 3 hours 30 mins - which is around 72mph point-to-point.

This is in an A6 3.0TDi, and he is a swift driver, but even so I think it would be difficult to make that journey in under 4 hours unless you were VERY lucky with the traffic, roadworks, etc.

Probably the highest average speed I've ever recorded in the UK was a journey from my home in Cheshire to Chertsey, setting off around 7:30pm. I did the 190 miles in 2h55m, an average of 66mph. I live only 20 minutes from the M6, the motorways were near-deserted with no roadworks (amazingly), and the destination was 5 minutes from the M25. I was able to cruise at 85 for pretty much all the time I was on the motorway.

Over decades, long-distance journey times have reduced - mainly because there's more motorway and dual carriageway - and average speeds vary considerably according to time of year, time of day and day of the week.

I always get good times travelling from the Midlands to the Far North-West of Scotland on the day before an English Bank Holiday Monday - it does depend on being north of Blackpool by 9am.

Its worked 2 ways for me.

A Sunday morning trip to Cadwell park in the late 80's would take me just under an hour. Door to door its about 60 miles. No cameras, not much traffic, could have some great fun on those sweeping A roads once out of the frequent villages with 30mph or 40 mph limits, but they did tend to be quite a few police motorcyclists lurking with hand held cameras in those villages.

Now the exact same trip takes probably an hour and 20 minutes in a faster car. I know where all the fixed cameras are but there are still mobile ones to catch you and the traffic can be a pain at times.

In the early 90's our bi-annual trip to Aviemore used to take about 8 hours travelling time for the 430 miles. Its still 430 miles but the M74 is much better than the old road and the A9 has been improved in parts. Takes us 7 hours travelling time now.

In about 1994 I did Eastbourne to Newark, Notts in about 4 hours. Other half's company Xantia 2.0i. After hitting motorway just N of Tonbridge Wells went below 60 once (Dartford Tunnel). Did not dip below 90 once on A1. Impossible now I should think, due to traffic & cameras. Plus I drive like a grandad nowadays.

I used to travel from Salisbury to Carlisle 320 miles regularly in the 80's and often managed average of 75/80. Although the Escort needed a fill up on the way.

Often travel from Winchester to Linlithgow, around 450 miles. No need for refueling on route and possible to average much higher speed. Of course equally likely to be much slower.

I can't believe some of these times. What bladders too....

Our Avimore trip times are travelling times as stated. We have always had 3 stops to change drivers, water the dog and us. If I didn't stop would need a bucket in the car.

A VERY longtime ago I did 112 miles in an hour on the M6, in 3 litre si BMW.

In about 1992, I drove an Uno Turbo at an indicated 120-125mph from about Stirling to some services near Penrith, where I had pull off to refuel.

It wasn’t just me though: I’d decided to stay-with a Mercedes S500.

I suppose it was the sort of thing he blithely did on every journey, because it would be his right to, wouldn’t it.

Couple of my mates are/were bikers, having a blast on the A14 one day 140 plus, they came up behind a MB SL AMG of some sort, which promptly floored it and disappeared...both of them well impressed.

My fastest average journey times were by lorry in the 80's when i was on nights, no limiters then to speak of and very few cameras, once you get over a certain speed it becomes easy to keep an eye open for a vehicle pacing you when the roads are empty.

We'll never see free motoring again like our generation enjoyed.

Well.... in my various journeys for work I use the AA's route planner to estimate time needed so that I'm with the customer on time. I find it's pretty accurate as I stay within speed limits; I tend to beat the AA time if roads are clear, but only by a small fraction.

The website says 838.6 miles in 15h 59min, so 52.46mph average.

ViaMichelin offers 839 miles in 15:51, so 52.9mph.

Well Ed v if you can't manage that how do you get a nights sleep? If you don't believe some of these speeds let me enlighten you. Saturday, 4am departure, mid summer, dry, A34 M40 no speed cameras. M42 variable speed limit so 75, M6 toll & M6, A/M74, M73, M80, M876 no speed cameras, less than 5 miles single carriage way either end, seriously, no road works, light traffic, non stop - why would that not be possible?

Let's not get started on Europe before the French got daft with limits on autoroute, early breakfast in Winchester, dinner in Barcelona.

Part my non-belief is probably that I had no idea people drove any vehicles at such speeds on public roads while being free to own computers to report it from thier own homes some years later!

In one day I drove:

Stoke on Trent to Montrose

and back. 690miles from 6am to 6pm.

I was very tired.

M6 A74...etc

But I was returning MIL to her home so worth it.. Late 1980s.

Thanks for that, really interesting article. Only 45 minutes stopped in that journey, which is impressive, although the bit about delirium setting in is quite worrying ...
