1987 Opel Kadett 1.3 - Carb to injection conversion - Rayparker

In the tv program Car SOS they converted a Triumph Herald from carbs to fuel injection. Does anyone know where I can buy this conversion, as I have a 1987 Opel Kadett 1.3 that I would like to convert to this system

Thank you for any help.

I converted my "classic" from carbs to injection.

It runs much better and mpg has increased from 26 to 34.

Downside is the cost, almost £2000 and that was doing all the work myself.

Plenty of specialists offering systems, suggest you try the owners club for any members exepriences as there are plenty of sharks.

This would be a big undertaking, and quite an ambitious one. I would've thought the cheapest way to do it would be to find a suitable car in a breakers yard and take the parts off of it. You will need the ECM, inlet manifold complete with fuel injectors and fuel pressure regulator, a means of measuring air flow or manifold vacuum, and a coolant temperature sensor and air intake temperature swnsor. You will also need a means of supplying the ECM with crankshaft speed and position, although you may already have this if your car has electronic ignition. You'll also need a high pressure electric fuel pump with safety cut out protection and a fuel tank which has a swirl pot inside. Your mechanical fuel pump will not be up to the job since fuel injection systems run at about 36psi, much higher than a mechanical diaphragm pump can deliver. You will also need a throttle switch or a potentiometer. I can't imagine finding the components would be too difficult, but wiring it all may present you with a headache. Good luck anyway.

For such an old car why spend the time and money?

I would just live with the carb.

The 1.3 engine was the old pushrod engine?

Just watching Car SOS and the Triumph Herald is on.

The kit used is Emerald and the bloke who brought it onto the programme is Dave Walker who runs the company.

Here is a link, its the carb to TB kit you would need at £1896 inc Vat.

It looks very comprehensive but there are some additional parts required. First is a fuel swirl pot, budget £100, then you need a low pressure lift fuel pump budget £50 and a HP fuel filter for another £50 and then you need high pressure fuel lines. The throttle linkage will either need modifying or a custom one. Don't even thinkl about using standard rubber, it turns to Gorilla Snot in no time with modern fuels. I used TFE hose and fittings from Think Automotive and its not cheap. The fittings and hose alone cost £200 making them myself, if you need them making at the factory its more cash. You will also need to provide a return to the fuel tank, I fabricated one via the sender which cost about £10 in parts but this is not always possible.

That little lot is £2300.

If you don't have a suitable inlet manifold budget another £200, thats £2500.

If Emerald do not have a map available it will need a rolling road or dyno session. Budget at least £300 but be prepared for further visits as they rarely get it spot on first time.

Total £2800.

To get the most out of this you will need a new custom tubular exhaust, budget £800.

And before you go on the road with the extra power get the brakes upgraded. Calipers, discs and fitting kits are about £400 a corner.

Total all in £5200.

And that is DIY. If you want it doing for you the labour will be at least another £2000.

So budget at least £7200.

Worth it for a 27 year old 1300 Kadett?

Thank you very much for your help and information. It is much appreciated.

I think I might just pass it by as it certainly is costly. :-)
