Hyundai ix35 - Steering Problem - calleva

I purchased a 2 year old ix35 2.0 auto from a Hyundai dealer in September 2014. The vehicle consistently pulls to the left on all roads and at all speeds. To maintain a straight line right hand pressure is required on the steering wheel.

The vehicle has been back to the dealer four times, tracking has been adjusted twice and dealer says vehicle is performing correctly. It still pulls left and dealer says there is nothing else they can check.

Have you any suggestions as to what night be causing this problem.

Incorrect tracking won't normally make the car pull to one side unless its a very long way out, incorrect camber angle will but its not normally adjustable. The first thing I would do is swap the front wheels over and see if it makes any difference, could be a dodgy tyre.

What size wheels and tyres are fitted ?

The tyres are Hankook Optimo 225/55 R18 98H.

I'm sorely tempted to say it's probably just a wheel and tyre size issue. That's the largest wheel size you can get on the iX35, and the larger the wheel, the more they tend to tramline and follow camber.

Thanks. I guess I just have to put up with it, certainly not planning to change wheels and tyres!

In my experience dealers say they checked the tracking but don't. And it shouldn't be required to track twice unless they did it wrong the first time.

I would get the tracking checked at a tracking specialist, it costs nothing if the trackings ok, only chargeable were i go if you have the tracking reset.

Its nothing to do with the wheel size i use 225/55/19 with no issues.

Have you tried swapping the front wheels as Peter.N. suggested?

I'm observing the same problem on my ix35 that I bought 2 months ago. Been to the dealer once and he said he corrected the steering wheel angle but I still feel the car doesn't go straight and I constantly need to adjust the steering. Did you resolve the problem in the end?

Hi has anyone got a resolution for this issue?

Just bought a 2013 IX35 and having the same issue, dealer has done the tracking twice however I have taken it myself and it was out so had it done and got the dealer to re imburse me however it's still a little to the left and very frustrating?

Still no resolution and thats the only frustrating thing with my ix35. I have been to two Hyundai dealers and got the same response, they said thats how ix35 steering works. Not sure if there is a way to adjust the steering mode or something.

Some FWD cars do pull to one side - due to an effect known as "torque-steer" - there are ways round it on more expensive models but if the iX35 has it you're stuck with it.

If it is like my Hyundai i20, this problem is probably cause by incorrect setting of the Steering Angle Sensor in the steering column. This needs to be adjusted by a Hyundai main dealer using their GDS tool.

Using the correct tool, the task looks fairly simple. But the operator must do it carefully and must follow the instructions precisely.

The actual adjustment process is shown after 2.19 minutes.

Simple test.

Drive on a strait piece of road with some camber in left lane and any car will normally pull to the left.

When its safe drive in the right hand lane of the same road in the same direction and a perfectly normal car will pull to the right.

That is what our Kia Ceed did but to be fair it was more pronounced than on any other car we have owned. It had the biggest wheel/tyre combination on that Kia fitted to that model, 225/45 x 17 but when I changed to the winter tyres (205/55 x 16) it drove exactly like other cars we have owned.

If the car still pulls to the left when you drive on the right had side there is a problem with the car.

On a perfectly strait piece of motorway with little camber the Ceed would run a strait as an arrow but the combination of car and tyre size was very sensitive to the road you were on. Annoying I know but its perfectly normal for some cars and Kia/Hyundai appear to top the list.
