Nearly put my trusty old MX5 in for scrappage against a new Passat, VW were offering £5k. Found we didn't like the Passat on the test drive so ended up selling privately.

It really does make me weep, I wouldn't mind a bet that the majority of M/B, Audi & BMW were fully roadworthy and with a little bit of TLC would still be roadworthy today. One thing that did surprise me was the number of VW's on the list.

If most people taking part in the scheme had used a few brain cells they would have realised they were often better off buying without trading in.

And the only green thing about it was the extra cash made

It makes rather sad reading really. I agree that many of the cars would have been rot boxes, but I bet loads were perfectly servicable.
And some rare/desirable ones there.
Also it doesn't say a lot for the literacy of sales/admin staff who would have no doubt had to do a lot of form inputting. Many variations of spellings of makes and models.
Oh well, that's progress.
|
Sadly, it isn't progess. Judging by some of the cars I know people traded in, a significant amount were very good cars.
|
The sad thing is not the exotica (there will always be examples of exotic cars) but the simply rare cars that have been scrapped for the sake of a grand:-
Austin Healy, 4 Citroen CXs, Citroen GSA (rare as hens' teeth), 25 Citroen XMs, 2 Fiat Uno Turbos, Ford Escort Mexico, Escort RS 4x4, 18 XR3is, 4x Hillman Imps, Humber Sceptre, Lancia Beta, Lancia Beta Spyder, Lancia Delta Integrale 16v, 2x Lotus Exlat, Lotus Eclat Excel, 9x Mazda RX7, 67 MGBs, 18 MG Metros, Morris Traveller, 10 x Nissan 300ZX, 3 x Nissan Skylines, peugeot 104ZL, 28x Peugeot 205 Gti, Peugeot 504, 2 Peugeot 505Gtis, 3x Porchse 928, 3x Renault 5 GT Turbos, 1 Renault Clio Williams 2, 2x Renault Fuegos, Rover 3500 saloon, Rover SD1 3500 VDP, 39 Rover 800s, 27x Rover Montego, 4x Skoda Estelle, Suzuki SC100, Triumph Dolomite Sprint, 12x Triumph TR7, 11x Triumph Heralds, 2x Triumph Vitesse, 5x Vauxhall Chevette, 3x Vauxhall Viva, Volvo 1800, Wolseley 1500, Wolseley Hornet, Wolseley 16/60

Even if the cars were beyond salvation (i doubt many were) they should have at least been stripped for parts

They did need a current MOT, for what it's worth.

Yes, I had meant to say that it is tragic that so many everyday popular family cars have gone, but I hit the send button too soon.
One day the classic world will miss them. Seriously, cars like Metros, Rover "moderns", Pegueot 205s et al. And all those Minis and Minors. And Chevettes, Vivas, Firenzas. And virtually every mainstream car that people will say "I remember when" kind of thing.
Lord Mandelson would not understand the consequences of this short lived gimic.

I thought the purpose of the scheme was getting people in more debt through taking out car loans.
|
Maybe, but it was instigated by / for the car industry because demand (for lots of things) had slumped.
