Volvo S40 - HPI Check / National Mileage Register - papa_bear

I have been to see a used Volvo S40 & have agreed a price after but am having second thoughts based on a £10 HPI Check done via mycarcheck.com that show the vehicle having many thousand more miles than the car's digital odometer states (81k+). No other elements of the HPI check is of any concern & the car seemed fine when I visited it. The car is under MOT from earlier this year & I could phone back to ask the vendor for the either the MOT Test Number from the VT20 or the Document reference number from the V5C registration certificate (in order to confirm the odometer reading via the DVLA website):

But my questions to the forum include: How reliable is the National Mileage Register? And, why might the check (see below) only show upto August 2008?

We have the following mileages recorded for this registration:

  • 147,227 miles recorded on 27 Aug 2008
  • 137,296 miles recorded on 29 May 2008
  • 123,640 miles recorded on 7 Jan 2008
  • 108,890 miles recorded on 15 Aug 2007
  • 108,327 miles recorded on 8 Aug 2007
  • 94,756 miles recorded on 2 Apr 2007
  • 82,421 miles recorded on 30 Nov 2006
  • 80,557 miles recorded on 9 Nov 2006
  • 53,199 miles recorded on 14 Feb 2006

That mileage history seems too comprehensive to be wrong and just a simple mistake, that car has almost certainly had it's clock seriously wound back!!!

There are frequently errors on the NMR which can throw up oddball entries and can be disregarded.

However, in this case, the data is consistant and I would investigate further before buying.
