Skoda Superb - Wheel/Tyre Sizes - Humphreys

I am considering buying a Skoda Superb Estate 2.0L 140PS 6 Speed Manual.

The car comes with 18" alloy wheels only and I have read several complaints online that the tyres because they are low profile, wear out quickly, replacements cost < twice as much as 16" tyres or more to replace, do not give a decent ride, increase the road noise in the back, etc.

Skoda will not sell the car withthe equivalent 16" tyre and say the car was designed to take 18" LP tyres 255/40/18 and will handle/drive differently if you use anything else. Well they would say that wouldn't they as they likely have done a deal with tyre/wheel manufacturers.

I have been in touch with Wheelbase and they can provide the equivalent tyre in 16" which of course is a higher profile 205/55/16.

An Honest John articel said there may be an issue with the brake calipers ?

Anybody have any advice on this ? I have read articels where people say they have done this succesfully and the ride is much better, quieter and saves money on tyre replacements.

Not only brakes, if you fit a tyre size that is not approved by the manufacturer you will find yourself without insurance should you need to claim. Changing wheel/tyre sizes is considered a modification by insurers and you need to inform them about this. Normally there is not an issue providing the size you fit meet the speed and load ratings and are an approved size. If the size is not Skoda approved the insurers are unlikely to cover you unless you use a specialist insurer who looks at the merrits of each case and decides based on the facts. This will undoubably cost you.

But before you buy the car why not drive it and decide for yourself. Yoiu may find it perfectly acceptable. Just because you have read something does not make it a 100% fact. Have you never made your own decisions before based on a test drive.

I can understand the OPs concern on most cars low profile tyres give an awful ride, from my point of view they may look flashy but the comfort suffers. It would be of sufficient concern for me to perhaps look for an older model with decent tyres. But them I'm old and ride comfort is far more important than looks or roadholding.

My thinking on this is if a manufacturer insists on selling a car with huge wheels and rubber band tyres with no option for something kinder on my pocket I don't buy it.

Whilst the OP may have found a tyre of equivalent diameter, there is a marked difference between a 255mm and a 205mm wide tyre.

Tiguans come with 16", 17" or 18" sizes depending on the spec level. Same size engine and brakes just bigger wheels. I've gone from 17"/235/55 to 16"/215/65 on winter tyres which is the size of tyre fitted to the lower spec Tiguan with same engine and brakes. The difference is definitely noticeable so much so that I may sell the 17"s and when these winter tyres wear out fit 16" all seasons having researched the db rating a bit beforehand.

Looking at the wheel sizes of used Superbs a 1.6 Greenline estate comes with 16"/205/55 and a 2.0 SE estate with 17/225/45 and a 2.0 Elegance hatch with 18/225/40. The 3 cars are all 2100kg+ with only 9kg difference between them.

Unless Skoda have made radical changes to the Superb I'd assume these sizes are still available on same spec current MY Superbs. A quick look into the manual will show the supported tyres sizes, does with my Tiguan - same owner/manufacturer.

EDIT/Update - the current Superb comes with the same range from 16" to 18" so you should be ok downsizing once you find a dealer willing to help/deal.

I've been running my Fiesta 1.4Tdci for seven years before I noticed that there's a plate riveted to the pillar at the bottom of the passenger door which has the three recommended wheel and tyre sizes for the car with the recommended pressures! So if Humphreys' dealer says that only one wheel and tyre combo can be fitted, look to see if that plate is riveted on! My feeling are that big wheels and skimpy tyres are for showroom use only and shouldn't be road-legal. Perhaps because I grew up with 80 profile cross-plies - which were comfortable! Minor Thous and Austin A40 Farinas looked so nice with a pair of Firestone Town & Countries on the back.

Town and Country tyres, now there's a trip dowm memory lane.

What a lot of fuss, i'll wager that a Belgian regd Superb of equivalent spec is riding comfortably on its sensible and affordable 16" tyres....do they see British buyers coming i wonder, ''oh look he comes another Tommy, quick stretch those elastic bands on @ £180 apiece, half wit Tommies love bling''.

"Guaranteed to go, through mud, slush and snow, or Firestone pay the tow" was the slogan as I remember. Would any tyre manufacturer risk such a selling pitch these days?

Oh, and i meant to say Humphrey, stick to your guns, if they won't play ball buy elswhere.

I know on another forum a chap, like you, wanted the higher spec but didn't want the elastic band tyres that went with it, the Ford dealer in question was only too happy to do the swap with a lower spec model, they then have an upgraded (yes people actually believe a crashing ride and tyres at twice the price is an upgrade) lower spec model to sell...everyone happy.
