BMW - unusable in snow. Expensive running costs - some models no spare and silly tyres.

Volvo - silly parts and labour prices with insufficient market penetration to lower prices with competition. 5Cyl diesels have problems which are expensive to fix.

Audi - FWD (nose heavy design makes for really good traction), good diesel engines (avoid the last of the PD engines and buy a CR), and loads of good independents and cheap spares online.

Of course, if there's a rubbish VAG badge which will do your job (Exeo/Superb) you will get better value. Properly branded service parts for my diesel Superb are astonishingly cheap online.

659.

So no major design faults surrounding the common rail diesels 659FBE?

It won't be long before all the good PD engines become too old to consider anymore.

All the 'big' estates are cavernous and each has it's own appeal. The BMW will be the sportiest drive, some would argue that the Volvo would be the most comfortable, others might say the Audi has the most pleasing interior. An E Class is a very pleasant place to spend a long journey but 8 grand will buy you a whole lot more Mondeo than it will any of those.

If you can get a chance to try one you will be pleasantly surprised. I have an E Class estate which is very very good but I have had Mondeo estates and they are much more than just the ordinary cars they are sometimes seen as.

If you avoid the sub 2.0 engines they are quick, well appointed and handle very nicely. Tons of space in them. Well worth a look. The other thought might be a Superb if you can find one in budget.

If you're set on one of the 'premium' makes then I might, oddly enough, be looking at older cheaper ones. An 8 grand BMW is not going to be in the first flush of youth and it's quite a lot of money to chuck at a careworn car. Might be better to go for an older / higher mileage one for 5 grand or whatever and keep the rest as maintainance budget.( in the hope you don't need it of course ! )

Good hunting !

Legacys/Outbacks are popular up your part of the world, no doubt for the right reasons.

Presumably as MPG is important then you probably want Diesel, i have no idea how good or bad the Subaru engine is, for me a 2 litre isn't man enough for a car of this size with permanent 4WD.

Accord would do the job well too except it drives the wrong wheels, like Mundanes Insignighters and VW groups models.

Whatever you go for, and you appear to want a premium make, then i would base the choice on what make specialist indies there are where you live, any of the three makes if you need to use main dealers will produce eye watering bills.

659 touches on a valid point, tyres, some of these cars will be sitting on £200 a pop tyres if on bling sizes and especailly if on runflats, that might not worry you but its something else you need to consider.

If i had to suggest a premium estate with a Diesel engine, it would be a facelift, so 06 on, W211 E class Benz, with the 4 pot tractor engine in 220 or 250 guise preferably on 16" rims, but only if you have an accessible MB specialist indy to maintain it properly for you.

Sitting on 16" rims also makes tyre choice easier and cheaper when it comes to winter tyres, if wanted.

If you get an A6, make sure it's a proper one, a Quattro 4x4.

I too would go for a Mondeo or Superb - lots of space in either and your £8,000 will get you a much newer car than you'd get if you go for the premium German makes, good as they are.

You could look at the Japanese, particularly Subaru: would an SUV like a Forester or Honda CRV do the job for you? 4wd might be useful in a hard Highland winter. But you'd have to see if they have enough cabin space.

Another factor for you in particular is where the nearest dealer is.

thanks guys after a bit of digging iv come across a 08 mondeo estate titanium x with tthe 2ltr coal engine the 140 version looks like a lot of car for the 8k, i think i could probably get it for 7k its done 73000 and looking at the wheels the wifes focus winters would fit the mondeo.

The Mondeo estate is a good car, I had one for 3 and half years and 40K miles. Very quiet, comfortable cruiser on A-roads and M-ways and handles very tidily. Loads of rear legroom, big boot.

The 2.0 140bhp TDCi hauls it around quite well, just not very excitingly. The DPF system on these seems pretty robust compared with other makes. Economy is OK, not great though - expect low 40s on average. I got just over 42mpg average from mine.

as i said people thanks for your input, if i get my new job then im gonna go for the mondeo, i reckon i can get at least 50 mpg, so as required then this thread is solved again many thanks

The 2.0TDCi engine in the Mondeo is one of the better diesel engines out there - while you might have problems, that's true of any other car of this age, mileage and price point. However, you're certainly going for one of the better bets.

Regarding 50 mpg ... I don't fancy your chances. 42-45 more likely. But that's still pretty good, and you won't find many good-sized estates that will do much better (I'll wait 5 min, someone is bound to be along saying how they get 238 mpg from a V6)

lol 42 - 45 probably about right im going by the wifes focus supposed to do 64+ but iv had 61.2 out of it going down south, but normal round town its still doing 55 ish, like i said i hope i get the new job i really wanna go buy it now

I don't think you'd be disappointed. I had 3 Mk3 Mondeo estates as workhorse cars. None of them ever let me down over huge mileages and did exactly what they were needed to do. The newer ones are even better apparently. HJ rates them if you have a browse at the reviews section.

Good luck with the job !
