My st220 on start up the revs are fine idle about 1000 but after 1 minute drops to 800 and then moves between 1000 and 800 constantly the battery light flickers on and off it seems to be losing power as the dash lights also dim when this is going on. Is this the alternator ? Or something else and are there any remedies that I can do it's also bank holiday so no garages are open. Help is needed please!

If the idle speed is unstable,i would suggest you look for split or broken breather pipes.There are a few under the throttle housing and some at the back of the engine.They are made of plastic and rubber and become brittle with age.Don't think it will be the alternator.
