2001 Y-reg Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia - cam belt change - JoeRiddle

My focus has about 27k on the clock but is 13 years old.

Does the cam belt need changing?

I heard it needs doing after 10 years but with so few miles on the clock and so few pounds in my pocket I'm reluctant to shell out unless necessary.

At the same time I don't want my engine to die.

Any advice much appreciated.

Joe

Yes, immediately, you are living on borrowed time.

Ford specify 100,000 miles or 10 years max.

If it breaks your car will be scrap.

Whislt it is being done make sure they change all the pulleys and also check if its a full strip to change the water pump. Very little additional extra labour to do a full job but if pulleys fail it will wreck your engine and if the water pump fails and it requires the cam belt off to change it you will pay the same labour out again.

Any ideas on what this should cost?

No need to change the water pump if it's a "Black Top"!

I'm pretty sure a 2001 Focus will be.

Edit..............Cost? For a full Gates Kit fitted I would say £250 to £300, depending upon where you get it done.

Correct but the 1.6 is not a Blacktop. Its the Zetec SE that is also called the Sigma. Its the engine used in the Fiesta mainly.

Cost wise it has recently cost me £130 trade for a genuine Ford Zetec Blacktop cam belt, tensioning pulley and guide pulley. The Gates, Conti etc ones were a little less but none came with the guide pulley.
