I have been advised by the Audi Dealership that the cam belt needs changing after 5 years old - the car has covered approximately 23000 miles, mainly short journeys around town.

Have you checked your owners manual,? would think that combination of age and stopstart motoring makes it essential, but get alternative quotes too, and if the water pump driven by the same belt, get that done at same time.
