BMW 1 Series Sport 60 plate 22k miles - Wheel alignment safety issue ? - stivvy

I would be interested in getting views about whether there is a safety issue, either directly or indirectly, when all four wheels needed significant adjustment. BMW dealership had the car in for inspection on two occasions found nothing wrong. Independant tyre specialist analysis identified problem and adjusted accordingly. Dealer is adamant that there was no "safety issue" . I'm not so sure.

Can you be sure which one was right?

Two items: one is that within 4k miles the FNS tyre had outside tread down to 1mm, the FOS tyre down to just under 3mm both from 7mm start-up, plus the readout from the computerised analysis. On top of this the unsettled driving experience which started the whole episode. What else is there?

Your main problem is the simple issue that when BMW checked the car it was fine but when you next drove it you may well have clattered a kerb or pothole and knocked the alignment out.

Because of that you might as well just forget it and move on. There is no way you can prove that no damage was caused in everyday use after the BME check.

The symptoms were present from day one. The tyre specialist inspected all the mechanical bits and confirmed there was absolutely no sign of impact and in any case it would be extremely unlikely that all four wheels would be affected. BMW did not do any checks on the first occasion, simply a 400m road test and I've not been given any details of the second check. So I cannot accept your dismissal and fully intend to persue a claim.

Is that 400 miles or 400 metres. Either way they were having a laugh. 400 miles means someone went on holiday in the car, 400 meters means they drove it down the street and back.

So I cannot accept your dismissal and fully intend to persue a claim.

Your choice but don't expect any claim to be settled in your favour.

Stivvy, i too think you are on a hiding to nothing here, though no harm is asking for a contribution to the costs involved, however i suspect if they offer anything it will be a vague promise of looking after you at the next overpriced service.

The dealership obviously got a half wit to check the car out, and the twerp didn't have a clue and could care even less.

I'd be inclined to vote with my feet and use the services of one of the very good make specific indies out there in future for any work that needs doing.
