Subaru Legacy - Engine knock - Aerostat

I have just bought a 1999 Subaru Legacy estate with 140,000 miles on the clock, all with one owner. It seems in pretty good condition but recently it has started making a knocking sound which is particularly noticeable when starting up from cold but still there when warmed up. Do I have a big problem or is it a common thing which won't develop into a big and expensive problem?

If its little or big ends that are making a noise I suggest you do not use the car especially big end,If you are not able to strip and rebuild the engine you are looking at alot of expense probably why the previous owner sold it.It could of course be something reasonable cheap to repair you need to locate were the noise is coming from, a rubber tube used as a stethoscope is useful these are flat boxer engines so it should be easy to find were the noise originates.
