On some concrete sections of the A12 in NE Essex and parts of the A14 near Ipswich in South Suffolk the Highway Authorities have machined a series of closely spaced grooves parallel to the direction of travel. The effect is a very large reduction in road noise compared to the normak grooves at right angles to the direction of travel. These are obviously short test sections but does anyone know if this is likely to become a standard practice as the noise reduction make s driving so much quieter and enjoyable.

It may be new drainage channels to compensate for the originals lost by wear/tear of the concrete. Concrete roads cannot be laid smooth but need the ridges to give grip when it's icy.

I hope it does become standard practice, but the road trial has been operating for years.

As with anything road related, it will probably be years before a decision is reached.

When road surfaces are trialled, they're generally just left in place after the trial finishes !

They have built hundreds of miles of autobahns in Germany using concrete and they are very smooth and are supposedly much cheaper and quicker to build and take the monoply from the black top boys .The downside is they seem not to last if they are not layed correctly.
