Land Rover Discovery 1; 3.5; V8 Auto 1992 K Reg - Starting Problem - ffolliott

Hi - looking for and tips as to what may have prevented starting. Car working fine, battery charged and cables tight. Parked up but on return a few minutes later failed to start when key turned - no sign of starter motor engaging at all - lights and all other electrics working ok. Rocked car in ‘gear’ and pulled round engine a bit with fan belts. Suddenly started and has been ok since. Like to locate fault if possible to prevent further episode..

Might it be sticky disengage switch on gear/selector lever or sticky starter motor. Any help welcome if this problem has been noted before.

Many thanks

Thi starting problem has persisted and fairly certain it is the inhibitor switch as a good wiggle of the gear selector lever will get it going. Replacement possible but have seen on other sites that this is common and it is possible to bypass or bridge this switch when the problem happens and the car will not start.

Any views welcome and advice as to the best way to create this bypass bridge/second switch .

Many thanks

If you can locate the starter relay,Iirc is in the fuse box or on the bulkhead ,under bonnet, then a by-pass circuit can be rigged up.But by doing this ,you will be overriding the safety switch (inhibitor switch) that stops the car starting in gear.On an auto,if the engine starts in gear,it will drive away immediately.hth
