peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

Hi,
How long does it take to burn the oil after a wet compression test?
( I may have put a bit too much oil in... )
Is it minutes, or hours?

This is my car after 10 minutes...
s103.photobucket.com/user/liammcl_2006/media/liamm...l

It has failed its emissons, and I am trying to figure out what the cause is.
I'm guessing the blue smoke doesn't help ;)y.
Is the car a scrapper? kinda looks like it...

The inlet manifold vacuum inlet pipe connector was blocked, so I've cleaned that.
(the black bit in the pic
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/liam...g )

The pipe from the carb, going pass the left of the battery to the warm air intake, always seems open... ie there is a constanmt vacuum pulling the flap
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/liam...g

The smoking seems a lot worse when the engine heats up.

ps compression results
dry 160,165,165,170
wet 200,210,245,245

Valve clearances are ok

Cheers
Liam

I think I'll try this.... just for the heck of it :)

Replacing valve stem seals with head and camshaft still in place...

I've done something similar when checking and setting the injection timing on a Peugeot/Indenor XDLP21 four cylinder ohv engine, but that was only number one cylinder at the flywheel end. Procedure was to turn engine over to TDC firing stroke on no 1 and use a special tool that hooked under the rocker shaft to compress the valve spring. Valve now resting on piston, use dial gauge on valve to measure distance before tdc etc, what a bloomin load of fuss, would have better to have reliable timing marks on the front damper pulley!

Thanks focussed,

so far so good tonight.... the rockers are out

tho' no 8 put up a struggle !

to compress the springs

peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - Cyd

I once put strong good quality balloons into the plug hole and blew them up to hold the valves in place. I'm fairly sure it was an Avenger engine if memory serves.

I then cut the end off a proper valve spring compressor and made myself a tool with a lever that I could bolt to the head and press down on to release the colletts.

When I'd finished I squeezed the end of the balloon with fingers and cut the knot off to let it down gently - don't just pop it because it might burst into many pieces and leave some behind in the engine.

Worked for me, might work for you.

Thanks Cyd{P}
an Avenger... back when cars had character !
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_Avenger

I haven't had a chance to do anything more with the car today,
but, tbh I think I'll put some nylon rope in the cylinders...
or I may use an adapter on the compression tester , so it fits my air compressor..

Cheers
Liam

Nice one Liam - a post where someone gets their hands dirty, on a car forum of all things! ;-)

peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

Thanks mss 1tw :)

I got my compression tool from Ebay today, for £10..but it is for use outside the car *doh*
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271247895474?ssPageName=STRK:ME...9

so I decided to have a look around the cellar ...and found these
(which include a xmas tree holder and a kitchen fryer flipper :) )
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Spri...g

A cunning plan ! ;)
hmm... a bicycle reflector

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Spri...g

Dunno if it'll compress enough..ithe spring goes down about a centimeter or so
(you can see the red bit of the engine block to the right of the "tool"
in the 2nd pic below)
(this was just a test...there is no string in the cylinder to push up against the valve)

ps if it doesn't work, I'll either get this from Ebay £6.75
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Valve-spring-compressor-AT675-/...1
or make just one..

Ye Gods !
Those retainers , collets, don't half shoot out !

I spent 5 minutes looking around the engine bay and
10 minutes on my hands and knees scanning the tarmac with a magnet !

Thanksfully I found them all... luckily the missing one was inside the metal cover plate.

I shall wait till I get the proper tool from Ebay before I attempt putting the springs back !
Maybe a towel over the top, to stop them shooting away,
or even loose sticky tape over the retainers would probably help.

Cheers
Liam
ps for info, I used 8mm rope from B&q @ 98p a mtr.
I bought 5 mtrs, but only used less than a meter

pps these torches are brilliant

An update...
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

That tool from Ebay is useless, as is... but with a bit of hammering into shape,
it does the job.
It is a bit fiddly but it is cheap as chips and I got there in the end.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120857127393?ssPageName=STRK:ME...8

Here it is hammereed into place
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

just remember to tap the seals all the way down
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

& then the fun begins :)
be prepared for the spring, retainer and especially the 2 keepers to fly everwhere !
I retrieved the retainer from some bushes 13 foot away !
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

Next time I would put a towel over them...and cover up the engine.
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

2 down, anoter 6 to go
I think these will be a lot easier !.....famous last words :)

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

Tara for now :)

peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

All done..
the last 6 went in no problems...probably half an hour all told.

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

these were the high tech tools used ;)
(and some nylon string)

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

It helps to have some form of tunnel to put the nylon string into,
before it goes into the spark plug hole,
otherwise the nylon has a tendency to fold up on itself and not go into the cylinder.
(I used a 10mm glow plug remover socket,
but any long socket around that size would do)

All snug :)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/valv...g

Next up, I am puttiung the rockers back on,
and setting the valve clearances.

BUT !!
I cannot find the torque setting, or how tight to tighten the locking nut
holding tha adjustment screw !

Has anyone got an idea what "tight" means?
is it hand tight and then 1/4 turn.. or half a turn?

Any advise would be gratefully received, as I am hoping to do them 2mrw

Cheers
Liam

peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - Peter D
Exactly which torque settings do you need. I realise you need the tappet setting but is sounds as is you need others.
Tell me what size the tread is on the tappet. I assume you have a manual but it does not tell you. Regards Peter
peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - Peter D
Remember that you can not use a torque wrnech on the nut unless you have a crows foot as you need access to the slotted head to stop it rotating when you nip it up. However you can get a feel for this by putting your torque wrench drive in a vive and you pulling on it at the length of the spanner you will be using. They could be M8's so 6 to 9 Ft-lbs. What valve clearance are you going to use. Regards Peter
peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

Thanks Peter,
I will be using 0.20 inlet and 0.40 outlet.

(All it says in Haynes, 2A.14 9.4
"once the correct clearance is obtained hold the adjusting screw and securely tighten the locknut"
What do you reckon?...hand tight the lock nut and then between 1/4 and 1/2 a turn.

Atm, I am trying to figure out what the valves should be doing at TDC...as I need a reference point,
ie which exhaust valve is fully open at TDC,
so I can start setting the clearances.
I am googling it at this very moment.

Maybe I should just eyeball the camshaft to see when the lobe is pushing the exhaust valve in, rather than faff with TDC? ...

I was surprised to see all the holes, in the underside of the tube !

Read section 4 No1 ex. fully open, adjust no 3 and no 4. etc, etc, etc.

Did you establish the size of the thread for the tappet. ? Regards Peter
peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

Hi Peter,
Sorry for the delay..

I've just been out this second, and here's a pic...maybe M8?
(It's between 8mm and 9mm on the lower scale)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/16%2...g

...and this is the plan for the inlet and exhaust...

I am enjoying reading this. And the addition of pictures is terrific. Good job mate. Nice to see people getting oil on their hands.

peugeot 106 1.1 1997 - Drying after wet test - liammcl

Thank you DrippingSump :)

I think I am nearly there...
Tonight I attempted to set the valve clearances...having never done them before.

I wasn't sure if it was important to get the cam lobe directly in the middle of the flat bit of the rocker?
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/All%...g

I guessed not...
so I just watched the spring itself to see when it was most compressed.
(It still stays compressed while the camshaft turns a tooth
...again, I guessed it didn't matter too much)

I may have over tightened the nut... not knowing what "tight" meant
as I had a bit of difficulty freeing the thread from the nut when I had to make re-adjustments
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/All%...g

I opted for too loose , rather than too tight...
I think it is sounding tappety? what do people reckon?
I'll have another go sometime... It should only take a few minutes, now I know how to do it.

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/All%...g

and all back together again

after
