2003 Saab 93ss - Tensioner Pulley - PNoddy

Just a quick question if anyone could shed some light on it for me.

I've started hearing a fairly distinct whine from the engine (2 litre petrol) of my Saab 93. Its very audible both inside and outside the car on cold start up, and after driving for a small while is only really audible at low speeds and revs of about 2000rpm. No warning lights at all.

Thought it might be the turbo but the sound seems to come from the auxilliary belt area of the engine (can't pin it down precisely). I noticed that the tensioner pulley is bouncing, a LOT. Could this be related to the whine? And should there ever be any bounce in the tensioner pulley?

No the pulley should not be bouncing.

Release the pulley from the belt and check the pulley is free to rotate. If the pulley is ok check the alternator.

Just a thought: aircon on or off whilst pulley is bouncing (and does it still bounce with aircon off?)?

Any damage seen on the belt as it's going round?
