Informing insurance company - spaulb
I was involved in a small accident today, I drove into the back of another car causing minimal damage, his bumper popped off and my number plate is cracked. We swapped details and he said he would contact me on Monday to see if we should settle without involving insurance companies but I'm wondering whether I should still inform my insurance? I don't want any surprises but at the same time I don't want my insurance company to start working on something they don't need to.

Yes. Almost without exception, there will be something in the small print which obliges you to inform them of any accident, whether or not a claim is involved.
