Volkswagen Transporter (2010 - )

Very refined and car-like to drive, upmarket cabin, durable and well built, smooth common-rail TDI engine, available as a Shuttle which seats up to nine, ESP stability control as standard.

Not quite as many variations available as there are with the Ford Transit.

Introduction

Amazingly more than 10 million Volkswagen Transporters have been produced since the model was first introduced in 1950 and more than a million T5 models have been made since it was launched in 2003, making it one of the best-selling and most popular vans in the world.

This 2010 version of the T5 is a thoroughly revised model, plus the most refined and car-like to date. It's easy to spot thanks to the new styling at the front which echoes that of Volkswagen's latest passenger cars such as the Golf, giving it a more sophisticated look.

The rest of the outside is pretty much the same as before, but inside there are major changes with a high-quality cabin that feels very much like one of Volkswagen's cars - it's certainly not what you'd traditionally expect in a commercial vehicle. Refinement is another big strength and thanks to a new 2.0 TDI common rail diesel engine (available in four different power outputs) it's quiet yet responsive on the move, even with a full load on board.

It's also a very versatile van and is available as a panel van with short or long wheelbases and low, medium and high roof heights. There is also the option of the new kombi, which can seat up to six people, plus two other people carriers - the window van or the Shuttle, which are both available with up to nine seats. There are also chassis or double cab versions, or by special order, a 'zugkopf' designed for those using the Transporter cab and engine only.

The Volkswagen Transporter is one of the best quality medium-sized vans around and easily the most refined. And if you want looks as well as practicality, there's even a Sportline model which comes with the added style of a body kit, front and rear spoilers, special alloy wheels and a leather interior.
