New Cars
Good: Sister car to the Toyota GT86, rear-wheel drive coupe that's designed as a driver focussed car, powered by a 2.0-litre engine with 200PS.
Bad: Not on sale until July 2012.
Good: Good compromise between a station wagon and an SUV. Now available with 2.0 litre chain cam 'boxer' diesel engine.
Bad: New prices are expensive; interior quality lags behind Volkswagen, Nissan and Ford.
Good: All-new Impreza with much improved styling.
Bad: Not on sale till later in 2012.
Good: Same qualities underneath as previous Imprezas. Cheap entry level 4WD 1.5R useful for anyone living above the snow line.
Bad: What happened to the styling?
Good: Very quick and controllable.
Bad: Catastrophic engine failures from using alloy pistons instead of forged steel. Not as well liked as previous generation cars.
Good: Improved 2.0 litre flat four diesel engine, four-wheel drive as standard, large boot area.
Bad: Petrol engine thirsty and CVT only, interior feels a little cheap. Estates only.
Good: Spacious and comfortable interior, good off-road ability, great tow car, decent ride quality.
Bad: Not great in corners, thirsty petrol engines, notchy manual gearbox.
Good: Subaru 'crossover' similar to the Nissan Qashqai, powered by new generation Boxer diesel engine.
Bad: Not on sale until 2012.
