I looked at the new XJ for luxury, the Porsche Cayenne and R-R Sport for 4x4/luggage/dog space, and a selection of Mercedes. The A7 Quattro SE, with air suspension, insulating glass, large wheels and a host of other options is all these cars rolled into one. It's almost as quiet and smooth as the XJ (in fact better than the XJs I drove, which all seemed to have big wheels), has the same engine as the Cayenne diesel (and better economy) and there isn't a comparable Mercedes (although the new M-Class might be an option now). The 8-speed 'conventional' auto is a perfect match for this engine, and the torque/acceleration is phenomenal.
With the hatchback and fold-down seats there is an enormous luggage space (a little narrow but very long) and the car's appearance is, in my opinion, one of the best on the road. I have fitted winter tyres so should be well-equipped for the snow (falling heavily as I write this!).
I've travelling 12,000 miles from new and it's been faultless.
I brilliant car, one of Audi's best-kept secrets.

Bought the car from a main dealer, as a pre registered car, 3ltr diesel 204 psi s line, front wheel drive, 100 miles on the clock. Daytona grey, i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it. Traded my BMW X5 ( my 7TH BM) Front wheel drive feels a little odd at times, but the car drives beautifully, and i am achieving 40 mpg quite easily. Quality inside and out if near perfect, plus the sd card slot for music is very useful. The optional Bose sound system is extremly good too.
However I have to report a problem. After a few days, the sat nav started freezing, which when following instructions through York city centre was a nightmare. Over the next few days the problem got worse, and the radio developed a mind of its own. Turning itself on and refusing to be turned off. Then the Screen started switching on and off, going in and out of the dash, before completely packing inn. I took the car straight back to the dealer , and they leant me a brand new A6Quattro (very impressive drive). They kept my car for 6 days. They renewed the full MMI brain(as they called it). After 2 days the problem started again. Straight back to the dealers (in fairness they came and picked my car up, and left me the A6 again). 5 more days at the dealers. They have told me that they have got a new NAV SD card and are going to check that it is all working before I get it back(LETS HOPE).
So, had the car 5 weeks, two of them I have been driving the A6. Hoping that this cures the problem. Loosing a little confidence, but still cant wait to get it back. Suppose that tells you how good i think it is. Though 20 years of trouble free BMW driving, has made me wonder about my wisdom in changing marques. Will update you when i have had it a few more weeks.
