Why doesn't my warranty cover my Volkswagen Golf's prematurely worn clutch?

I have a 2.5-year-old Volkswagen Golf. It's only done 26,000 miles and the clutch is starting to go. I have spoken to the Volkswagen garage, who informed me that the clutch isn’t covered due to wear and tear. I am appalled by this and can’t believe a item which drives the car is not covered by warranty. Do I have any legal rights under the Sale of Goods act?

Are you sure it's the clutch? If the engine is diesel the fault might be the dual mass flywheel, and if it is, that is covered under warranty. Dealers often say it's the clutch to get out of making a warranty repair.
