My Renault Espace has illuminated a warning light - does it really need a new engine?

I have a 2004 Renault Espace, and a warning light with an orange outline and a horizontal orange zigzag line comes on now and again. It also seems to lose power. I took it to my local dealer and they reckon it needs a new engine, but I think they are trying it on.

Have you looked in your driver's handbook? All of the warning lights should be explained in that. Did the dealer not say what the warning light was indicating, what it meant and why the engine needs replacing? Serious faults are normally indicated by a red warning light. If necessary, go to another local garage to find out what the light means. I would not change the engine without a second opinion.
