How is the EGR valve activated in my Renault Kangoo?

My 1.9 2003 Renault Kangoo diesel hesitates at idle speed and produces excessive smoke. I removed the EGR plug and its now working fine. Which sensor gives info to EGR and computer?

I am assuming that your vehicle has an ECU. If so then you should have a EGR sensor that sends a signal to the ECU, which in turn controls the EGR valve
