My son-in-law bought a Vauxhall Astra which has developed a fault. What are his rights?

My son-in-law has purchased, two months ago, a 2005 Vauxhall Astra CDTI (1.7-litre turbo diesel). The car is a saloon hatchback with only 31,000 miles on the clock. My son-in-law uses the car daily, but it stopped working two weeks ago. We contacted the garage and explained the situation, and they blamed us for not maintaining the car, which we have only had for two months. The garage, I believe, has collected the car and told us that a pipe had burst and this broke the engine. This is a car with only now 35,000 miles on the clock and we have owned it for only two months. I believe the garage had a three-month waranty on the vehicle. Their answer to us, when we asked them to fix the car or refund the money, was "good luck".

If you bought the car from a garage and paid a reasonable price for it, then the garage is liable for any serious fault that could have been developing on date of sale for six months from the date of sale. That is the law.
