What's the smarter buy - Mazda MX5 hardtop or soft top?

I love the look of the new Mazda MX5 hardtop, but could the retractable roof mechanism cause problems in years to come and would I be wiser to stick to the (much cheaper) soft top?

Yes, it could be trouble. Has been on the previous model RC. And, of course, the car is a bit heavier. I'd go for the much cheaper soft top.
