Why are indicators on the non-intuitive side?

I've just picked up a Hyundai Accent hire car and am gobsmacked to discover that the indicators are on the right-hand stalk. I thought that they had standardised this decades ago. The way things are going I suspect the hire firm will charge me for a set of wiper blades. Which other manufacturers do this?

Wrong. Indicators on the right are on the intuitive side for a right hand drive car so you can indicate with your right hand and change gear with your left. EU harmonisation forced them onto the left side so drivers of left hand drive cars could indicate with their left fingers and change gear with their right and we just had to get used to a system that is definitely not intuitive to us. Japanese, South Korean and all Far Eastern home market cars have the indicators on the right, but most are changed for export to Europe to meet EU harmonisation rules.
