Why is my 2002 Renault Clio II whining under acceleration?

Just back from a week's holiday driving around Scotland in my 2002 Renault Clio II 1.5 DCI 65bhp, which ran like a sewing machine. It did nearly 1000 miles without any problems. I got up today and washed it and then nipped to the shops. Within seconds of starting up I noticed a whistling sound getting louder as I accelerated. The noise goes away when you depress the clutch and change gear and then gets louder as you accelerate in the next gear. There are no warning lights, no noise when engine is idling, no noise when engine is revved up. It only happens when engine is accelerating through the gears. It has done 74,000 miles.
