Do you have any thoughts on my daughter's Ford S-Max starting problem?

My daughter is desperate. She has an 06 reg 2.0 TDCI Ford S-Max which intermittently takes several minutes to start from hot or cold. Her dealer has had the car several times, including whilst it was in warranty, but say they have ''plugged it in'' and can find nothing wrong. She has four young children and needs the car but is worried stiff about being stranded with the kids on board. The dealer will not acknowledge that this has been an ongoing problem which should have sorted whilst under warranty, so consequently my daughter is faced with going to a suggested Ford expert who works at £65 per hour to try and sort it out. Any ideas and help would be really welcome.

Tell her to switch on then leave it for 30 seconds before turning the key to start. It reads like the glow plugs are not heating up instantly.
