Why is my daughter's Ford Fiesta using engine oil?

My daughter bough a Ford Fiesta Zetec just over a year ago. It's in very good condition and quite fast. She hadn't noticed that the oil was running low. She had a major service about two months ago. They said the oil was low, but the service include a oil change. Within ten days the dash indicated she was low on oil. We topped it up. A week later it was low again. She took it back to the service station for another fault and they said it was low on oil. It is not burning oil, and there is no blue/black smoke. It doesn't leak oil on the drive. Do you know of any history with Ford Zetecs built five years ago? All the garage says is that it sometimes happens if the car is not cared for properly from the outset?

Could be piston rings, could be 'glazed' bores, could be valve stem oil seals.
