BMW convertible roof opening on its own

I recently sold my 65k mile 2004 BMW 330 convertible to my nephew, fully confident after 6.5 years of 100% reliability. It now lives outside, and some mornings he finds the windows down and the roof half open.

He has some major financial commitments in the near future (marriage & mortgage) and is reluctant to spend lots of money at a main dealer. I think damp must be getting into the workings somewhere, but is there any chance of a few pointers please before he decides to get rid of it?

Might be that he is sitting on the key and activating the 'global window opening' feature. Or might be that there has been moisture ingress to the locks and windows ECU inside the driver's door. On a 12 year old German car you can expect this sort of thing.
