What's the best compact SUV?

I'm looking to 'downsize' my SUV and quite like the look of the latest BMW X1. However, I have read that it's not the best in its class. Can you help me choose a new SUV?

The trouble is, most of its competitors like the Kuga, CX-5 and Tiguan are a bit bigger. Hyundai Tucsons, KIA Sportages, Nissan Qashqais and Renault Kadjars are argualbly the same size. Its most direct competitor is the Audi Q3. But the smaller Suzuki Vitara S is excellent and much cheaper.
