Does my Nissan Almera have a glow plug fault?

I have owned my Nissan Almera 2.2 Di S for about eight weeks now, and it's run with no problems. After returning from a week's holiday I am having real problems getting the car started. I wait for the glow light to go out and turn it over, when it seems to try and and fire up, then dies. After a lot of attempts it finally starts and a good rev clears out white smoke. It happens when it has been stood for a while and the engine is cold - is this the glow plugs, or something more serious? It runs fine and doesn't stall at all when started, but as soon as it's cold it takes ages to get going.

Might be an air leak into the fuel delivery system.
