Which all-wheel drive is best for efficiency?

I am torn between a 2004 Subaru Forester X AWD 2.5 and a 2005 Nissan X-trail 4WD 2.5. I want to know which is more fuel efficient; a constant AWD like the Subaru or a car which the driver can alternate between two-wheel and four-wheel drive?

Both os these are fairly juicy due to being 2.5 litre fours. Real MPG shows 27.8 for the X-Trail 2.5 and 26mpg for the Forester 2.5. www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/subaru/forester-2002

Excellent, honest vehicle, decent to drive on road and best in class off road. Better than original Freelander.
Very useful off-road yet an enjoyable car-like drive on tarmac. Looks and feels classier than its predecessor. Well built. Owners rate it.
