Standard vs premium petrol - which is best?

I have followed your site for some time and have many a time heard the advantages of Premium diesel (or even branded diesel) over supermarket diesel. I myself have experienced the improvements.

My question is whether the difference in premium fuels extends to petrol? My latest car, a 65 plate Citroen C4 Cactus, comes with the 110ps 1.2 turbo engine comes with recommendations plastered all over the manual and fuel filler cap for Total fuel which is not commercially available. So far, I've been using my local supermarket petrol without incident and achieved approximately 48mpg over 3000 miles. Would you expect to see a performance and economy benefit with branded/premium fuels and, more critically, will it keep the engine in better condition?

I recommend branded superdiesel and superunleaded, not the confusingly named 'premium' fuels, which are merely ordinary fuels. I specifically recommend Shell V-Power Nitro Plus. There is no commercial reason for this. Simply that it works the best of them all. It increases power at high rpm, increases torque at low rpm, keeps the engine fuel system clean and if you use the increased torque at low rpm to change up earlier you will benefit from improved fuel economy that can pay the difference in the price of the fuel.
